A Hake is an Oriental brush with a large broad wooden handle and extremely fine goat hair used for covering large areas. They can be used for applying glaze, but in Japan they are most often used for applying slip. "Hakeme" brush decoration is achieved when the slip is applied to the clay body at the "leather" stage and shows up the brush strokes when glaze fired.
