Bisque Ware

Stilts are used to raise pieces off of the kiln shelf to reduce the chance of glaze touching the kiln shelf and sticking.  It is also possible to use metal pointed stilts many times over and this type of stilt can leave a lesser mark in glaze surfaces.  Consideration must be given to the weight of pievces being stilted as the metal points soften with heat.  This type of stilt should also not be used in temperaures over 1060°C (Cone 04)

Stilting ware enables the pieces to be glazed all over, avoiding the need to leave at least the foot ring unglazed.  Mwtal pointed stilts are ideal for stilting earthenware firing no higher than 1060°C.  A small scar is left in the glaze after firing, which can be rubbed down using a abrasivew tool.  Metal pointed stilts can be used a number of times, but care should be used as heavier ware can cause the metal points to bend in the firing.
